A stump with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge

Sometimes the most magical spots aren’t the ones on the official map, but the ones we stumble upon by chance.
One morning recently I was walking on Conservatory Drive and witnessed a young couple sharing a hot beverage from a thermos while sitting on a large stump. It was a very romantic scene.
I looked around and realized that they had discovered something I’d never noticed: this two-person-sized stump likely has the best views of any stump in the park. Look to the south and there’s Sutro Tower; look to the north and you see the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge rise above the trees of the Presidio. It’s also a lovely place to watch the world go by – quietly. Sit awhile and dozens of cyclists, walkers, joggers, and people pushing strollers will pass.
The stump is located at the corner of Conservatory Drive and Arguello Boulevard, along the Oak Woodlands Trail. Across the street is the new Bay Area Young Survivors Breast Cancer Memorial Garden, which also has great views over the park.
But sometimes you just want to connect to the world while sitting on a stump, so you can feel the earth beneath you.
Whether you’re solo or sharing the cozy space with a loved one, it’s a reminder that sometimes the best seat in the house isn't what you’d think it is.
